Coal Bed Methane (CBM) is natural gas associated with coal deposits. Extracting the gas often requires a wet process. The ground water that is produced is extremely high in carbonates and/or bicarbonates.

Lower pH – The Sweetwater sulfur burner produces a diluted sulfurous acid for irrigation water amendment. A stream of raw irrigation water is introduced into the sulfur burner and sulfurous acid is discharged. Blending the *sulfurous acid with an irrigation pond or well will instantaneously begin to lower the pH of the irrigation water.Top

*Sulfurous acid produced on site using a Sweetwater sulfur burner is the most affordable method of acidifying irrigation water in the world. One ton of sulfur produces just over three tons of the equivalent sulfurous acid (1 ton sulfur: 3.06 tons of sulfurous acid). Shipping elemental sulfur is fast and affordable because it does not require permitting or special equipment. Sulfur is safer to handle and considerably cheaper than sulfuric acid.

Neutralize Carbonates and Bicarbonates – Irrigation using the Sweetwater sulfur burner is extremely effective at neutralizing carbonates and bicarbonates that tie up salts in soil used for agriculture. The sulfur burner produces sulfurous acid for irrigation water. The acid lowers pH and thereby neutralizes carbonates and bicarbonates in water and soil. When this occurs, the bond between carbonates/bicarbonates and calcium/sodium is broken.Top

Equipment Protection – Consistent flow of ground water can cause calcareous build up in pipes, nozzles, and other equipment. If left unchecked, calcium deposits can cause premature corrosion. The Sweetwater sulfur burner is so effective at neutralizing calcium carbonates and bicarbonates and lowering the pH level of the water that it can cleanse this build up from pipes.

Agronomic Benefits of the Sweetwater Sulfur Burner – Some CBM produced water is treated and recycled for beneficial uses in agriculture. The Sweetwater sulfur burner can have the same agronomic benefits using CBM produced water as any other ground water.
